Dr Alison Barnett MIEnvSc
Director of Operations
Alison has a PhD in animal behaviour and genetics and worked in academic research for 15 years before founding Mortimer Environmental in 2018. Alison is responsible for client liaison and operational management of the business, and brings significant project management experience to the team. She has a Level 1 bat survey licence and a CL51 beaver licence.
Dr Oliver Barnett CEnv MCIEEM
Director of Growth & Planning
Oliver has a PhD in ecological genetics and has worked for over 20 years as a consultant ecologist, previously leading one of the largest national teams of professional ecologists in the UK. Oliver leads on work winning as well as managing projects of all scales from local residential development to major infrastructure. He is co-convener of CIEEM’s Ecological Restoration & Habitat Creation Special Interest Group and has a Level 2 bat survey licence.
Andrew Lewis ACIEEM, PIEMA
Senior Ecologist
Andrew has a BSc in Environmental Studies and is an Associate Member of IEMA and an associate member of CIEEM. He has Level 1 great crested newt and bat survey licences and has experience in undertaking bat and great crested newt surveys on various local and regional projects. Andrew is also an experienced Ecological Clerk of Works.
Emma Brown
Consultant Ecologist
Emma has an MSci in Zoology and is a qualifying member of CIEEM. She spent three years working at a research centre studying animal behaviour before transitioning to ecological consultancy. She has experience with a wide range of surveys and technical skills such as PEA, HRA and BREEAM. She supports our clients with BNG assessments of medium to large-scale developments and creation of habitat banks.
Daniel Smyth
Senior Graduate Ecologist
Dan has a degree in Environmental Biology and is a qualifying member of CIEEM. He is experienced in providing Ecological Clerk of Works support on major infrastructure schemes and protected species surveys, including bats, badgers, great crested newts and otters. He also supports on BNG assessments.
Becky Cairns
Senior Graduate Ecologist
Becky has a Masters-level Certificate in Ecological Consultancy and is a qualifying member of CIEEM. She has over three years’ experience working with bats, including both survey and handling work. She also has experience undertaking reptile surveys and translocation projects. She is currently working towards obtaining both her Level 1 bat and great crested newt survey licences.
Isabel Matthews
Seasonal Ecologist
Isabel has an MSci in Marine Biology with Oceanography and has experience conducting water quality assessments, hydrological surveys, and marine mammal monitoring across a range of environments. Through volunteering with county and parish councils, she has developed a strong understanding of ecological practice and has experience supporting on bat emergence and great crested newt surveys.
Craig Cooper ACIEEM
Seasonal Ecologist
Craig is an associate member of CIEEM and has worked as a ranger for 15 years with local government and NGOs. He has experience in bat emergence and great crested newt surveys. He leads volunteer groups in surveying for bats, mammals, invertebrates and plants for the National Trust.
Theo Simpkin
Seasonal Ecologist
Theo has an MBiol with a specialisation in Ecology and is a student member of CIEEM. He has experience conducting a range of surveys, including river condition assessments, bat emergence, and basking reptile surveys. He has also volunteered with a local environment centre for the past 3 years, gaining practical habitat management experience and helping to conduct freshwater invertebrate surveys.
Ben Watkins
Seasonal Ecologist
Ben is in his final year studying Ecology and Conservation at the University of East Anglia, with an interest in behavioural ecology, especially in mammals. He has undertaken bat surveys and antelope camera trapping in Eswatini in Africa and currently assists us with bat emergence surveys. Ben volunteers at a zoo in his spare time and loves learning new languages.
