Biodiversity Net Gain

Biodiversity Net Gain

What is Biodiversity Net Gain?

In England, the Environment Act (2021) stipulates that a minimum of 10% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is required under a statutory framework introduced by Schedule 7A of the Town and Country Planning Act (1990). This was implemented for large sites on the 12th February 2024, with smaller developments to follow on the 2nd April 2024. Developers will be required to work with local governments and wildlife groups in addition to landowners and other stakeholders to support priorities for nature conservation.

How is it Assessed?

The following key processes are involved:·

  • Baseline Assessment: Habitat survey and condition assessment through site visits and digital mapping, checking of local policies and input into the Biodiversity Metric.
  • Comparison of pre-development habitats with post-development habitats, using a landscaping plan.
  • Delivery of 10% (or more) BNG through habitat creation or enhancement on-site, habitat creation or enhancement off-site or through the purchase of ‘Biodiversity Credits’ from local or central government schemes.
